Five time winners Mumbai Indians locked horns against 2014 runners up Punjab Kings in a really entertaining and nail biting fixture at Mullanpur’s Maharaja Yadavindra King Stadium and the Mumbai Indians edged out the home side in the final over thriller as the visitors won the game by nine runs. It was a must win game for both the teams as both of them were sitting at the eighth and the ninth spots but post MI’s win, they have moved to the seventh place with six points in seven games.

Punjab’s stand in skipper Sam Curran won the toss and asked MI to have a bat first and the visitors took the invitation with open hands as the duo of Ishan Kishan and Rohit Sharma got involved in a stand of 18 runs for the opening wicket but Kagiso Rabada broke the partnership as he dismissed Ishan in the second over of the game. But Ishan’s dismissal didn’t affect MI as the duo of Suryakumar Yadav and Rohit started their assault and ensured that Mumbai ended the powerplay on a good note. They stitched a partnership of 81 runs in 57 balls for the second wicket and hammered the Punjab Kings bowlers to all corners of the ground.

However, skipper Sam Curran had some other plans as he broke the partnership by dismissing Rohit Sharma in the 12th over as Harpreet Brar took a brilliant low catch at backward point. Post Rohit’s dismissal, the run rate of the visitors slowed down but Tilak Verma got his side back on track as he smashed two sixes off the bowling of Arshdeep Singh in the 15th over. Suryakumar Yadav looked set for a century but Sam Curran sent him back to the pavilion in the 17th over as Prabhsimran Singh took a good catch.

With three overs left, MI skipper Hardik Pandya decided to take matters in his own hands as he backed himself to play the role of the finisher but ended up picking out Harpreet Brar at mid wicket in the 18th over. Sam Curran decided to bowl the crucial 19th over himself and in trying to keep the ball away from the scoring arc of Tim David, he missed his line and length and ended up giving away 18 runs in the 19th over. To the relief of the home side, Harshal Patel kept the Mumbai batters quiet as he took the pace off the ball and hit the deck hard with his slower ones and ensured that the Hardik Pandya led team didn’t go past the 200 runs mark.

Punjab Kings had to chase down 193 runs if they wanted to take away those 2 points but the chase was a proper roller coaster ride as the Mumbai Indians bowling unit did almost everything right with the duo of Jasprit Bumrah and Gerald Coetzee combining with each other and sent four batters of the home side back to the pavilion within the powerplay. The Sam Curran led team looked in deep trouble but their batting depth helped them out and kept their side in the game.

Once again, the dynamic duo of Ashutosh Sharma and Shashank Singh played the rescue act as they got involved in a partnership of 34 runs in 17 balls for the seventh wicket. The latter soaked in majority of the pressure and went after the bowling from the word go but Jasprit Bumrah came to the rescue of the Mumbai Indians as he sent Shashank back to the pavilion.

After the dismissal of Shashank, 25 year old Ashutosh Sharma took matters into his own hands and played one of the best IPL innings ever as he scored 61 runs in just 28 balls at a mammoth strike rate of 217.86. Just three overs were left for Punjab to chase down the total of 193 runs but Coetzee’s brilliant short pitched delivery outfoxed Ashutosh and his wicket proved to be the turning point of the game.

Rabada kept the Kings in the chase with a six off the bowling of Hardik Pandya but an unnecessary second run made him lose his wicket as he fell short of the crease and Mumbai won the game by nine runs.
