With the IPL 2024 approaching its fag end, the race to the IPL 2024 playoff is getting heated. Even at the end of the completion of the 63rd game between Gujarat Titans (GT) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), we haven’t got our top 4 sides for the playoffs. Just seven games are left in the tournament as of now, and the competition for seven teams is still on. This article will take you through the playoff qualification scenarios for all IPL teams.

As things stand, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) is the only side that has got its ticket for the IPL 2024 playoffs. The Shreyas Iyer-led side has also ensured their top 2 finish following their overwhelming run in the tournament. The team has still got one game left, and they can use it to further cement their position atop the IPL Points Table.

While KKR has become the only side to qualify for the IPL 2024 playoffs, Mumbai Indians (MI), Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Gujarat Titans (GT) are the sides to be knocked out of the playoff race. MI were the first ones to get eliminated followed by Punjab Kings and Gujarat Titans.

In fact, GT had some outside chances to qualify for the IPL 2024 playoffs, which would have been possible only if they managed to win the remaining of their IPL games but incessant rain during the GT vs KKR fixture in Ahmedabad, last night, ensured a complete roadblock to Gujarat’s campaign.

Meanwhile, six IPL teams are still in the race to get into the remaining three IPL 2024 playoff spots. The likes of CSK, SRH, RR, LSG, DC and RCB are still in the hunt.

Notably, some teams have everything under their control to qualify for the IPL 2024 playoffs, some of them need to perform their best and hope for some results to remain in their favour.

What RR needs to do?

RR has everything under their control as far as their IPL 2024 playoff qualification is concerned. With 16 points from 12 matches, they are currently placed in the second spot. If they manage to win one of the remaining two matches, they will be through to the playoffs. Two wins in two matches will ensure that RR finish in the top two at the end of the league stages.

Even if RR loses both of its remaining matches, they will still have decent chances to qualify owing to their net run rate which currently reads 0.349.

Interestingly, if Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) lose to Delhi Capitals (DC) in match 64 of the IPL, RR will get an automatic qualification due to their superior rating points.

What CSK needs to do?

CSK has one game left in their campaign, and a win in that would help them secure an IPL 2024 playoffs spot, given their strong net run rate. However, if there is a loss in their final match against RCB, then they will hope for a few fixtures to go their way. For CSK’s entry to the playoffs, either SRH or LSG needs to lose one of their remaining games. If both the aforementioned teams finish below 16 points, then it gives an edge to CSK to qualify for the next stage.

What RCB needs to do?

RCB isn’t in full control of the situation due to their poor show at the start of the IPL 2024. With one game left in their IPL 2024 run, they are in a spot of bother. RCB has secured 12 points from 13 matches and has to face CSK in their final league fixture. It’s a do-or-die game for RCB. Even if they win the fixture against CSK, it won’t be sufficient to take them through to the top 4 as they need a few other games to go their way.

RCB will stand a chance to qualify only if SRH loses both of its matches, and LSG loses one of its last two fixtures. Moreover, to have a better chance, they need to win big against CSK, which will boost their net run rate.

What LSG needs to do?

LSG’s chances of IPL 2024 playoff qualification are considerably decent, but what could obstruct their way is the net run rate (-0.769). To be in contention, LSG needs at least 16 points, which means they need two back-to-back wins in two matches. Even that won’t be enough due to their poor net run rate. CSK and SRH’s could also finish at 16 points and their net run rate would be much higher than that of LSG’s. Moreover, even if RR loses both of its matches, LSG won’t be able to surpass its net run rate.

So, LSG, to remain in the hunt, needs to win and win big. Nothing less than that would be enough for them to qualify for the IPL 2024 playoffs.

What SRH needs to do?

Pat Cummins-led SRH, too, have full control over their run in the IPL 2024. SRH is placed fourth in the points table with 14 points from 12 matches. They still have two games left, which will be enough to ensure their playoff qualification in IPL 2024.

If SRH wins both of its matches – against PBKS and GT – they will not only be through to the playoffs, but they will also compete with RR for the top two finish. Even a solitary win would lead them to the qualification.

Meanwhile, if they lose both their games, then they may land in trouble with CSK and RCB potentially replacing them in the points table, given the two teams win the rest of their matches.

What DC needs to do?

Like RCB, DC also needs some miracles to propel their IPL 2024 run. The team currently stands in the sixth spot with six wins and seven losses. They aren’t in full control of the campaign and have to rely on various permutations and combinations.

DC’s last game against LSG is going to be a must-win, which will ensure that they are in the playoff race. Moreover, they need SRH to lose both of its matches and CSK to win against RCB. DC would hope SRH loses with a significant margin, which will impact their net run rate as well.
