Whether a midday meal or late afternoon snack, bagels are a handy ingredient to have at home.
But like most white bread, shop-bought bagels are often full of unnecessary additives, salt and sugar, meaning even if you opt for a healthier filling, you might not be making the healthiest choice when it comes to bread.
Thankfully, bagels are easy to make at home with just two ingredients. One chef has shared a way to make simple homemade bagels that are packed with protein and ready in minutes using an air fryer.
In a video posted on TikTok, food blogger and bestselling author Nathan Anthony shared his recipe for high-protein bagels. He uses flour and 0% fat Greek yoghurt to make the dough quickly.
The bread is ready in 18 minutes using an air fryer, proving homemade bread doesn’t always require hours in the oven.
Making a filling using eggs and cottage cheese, these protein-rich foods are an easy way to keep full for longer. The creator, who goes by @boredoflunch on TikTok, also adds avocado to his filling, a great source of healthy fats and fibre and is free of cholesterol.
This healthy homemade recipe is also budget-friendly. The ingredients needed to make enough bagels for four people and the filling cost just over £5.
The ingredients for the filling can also be found cheaply. They require self-raising flour, available at Ocado for 49p, and 0% fat Greek yoghurt, which is sold at Tesco for £1.20.
A six-pack of eggs at Waitrose costs £1.40, and cottage cheese costs £1.50. Avocados are available at Tesco for 75p, bringing the total cost of ingredients to £5.34.
Air fryer bagels recipe
Ingredients
200g self-raising flour
275g 0% fat Greek yoghurt
One egg, beaten (for the egg wash)
Sesame or poppy seeds for topping
For the filling (optional)
One avocado
Four boiled eggs
Two tablespoons cottage cheese
Handful spring onion
Handful basil
½ teaspoon chilli flakes
½ lemon
Salt and pepper
Pinch of dill
Method
Add the flour and Greek yoghurt to a bowl and mix with a fork or your hands.
Once mixed well, roll the dough into a ball and cut it into four even pieces. Roll each portion into a sausage shape and shape it into a circle, pinching the edges together.
Cover the bagels in egg wash and add your choice of seeds before popping into the air fryer for 18 minutes at 180C.
Prepare your filling while the bagels are cooking. Once they’re ready, cut the bagels in half and add your filling.
