Any AGR dues relief now up to government: Voda Idea

Kolkata:Vodafone Idea (Vi) has said it’s now up to the government to come up with a mechanism to offer financial relief to the company, after the Supreme Court’s recent rejection of the telco’s curative petition seeking a re-computation of its adjusted gross revenue (AGR) dues.

The telecom JV between UK’s Vodafone Plc and India’s Aditya Birla Group said there was a clear understanding on the government’s part that there was enough merit and strength in Vi’s case—seeking a correction in the calculation—and that it would be unfair to force the telco to pay for something that was a calculation error.

“We were hoping the court will consider our petition, but since that has not happened, the action and responsibility in some ways now falls squarely on the government,” Ravinder Takkar, chairman of Vi, told analysts on a business update call on Monday.

“We are deeply engaged with the government.” Meanwhile, telecom minister Jyotiraditya Scindia said the government is going through the apex court’s judgement.
