Supermarket selling cheapest fresh turkey named for Christmas feast

Traditionally, on Christmas Day you can expect to enjoy turkey and all the trimmings, plus dessert.

When it comes to this time of year, though, things can start to add up financially. There are the presents to take care of, the Christmas decorations and, of course, the food.

Don’t try to stretch yourself too far financially and end up with a debt headache come New Year.

Instead, you can help to keep costs low by opting for the cheapest, fresh turkey meat.

Out of all the major supermarkets, one has come out on top as the cheapest place to get your Christmas turkey.

Aldi announced it is the cheapest supermarket for fresh turkey, selling the Ashfields British Small Fresh Whole Turkey for just £7.50 (£3.75 per kg).

A medium turkey is available from Aldi for as little as £2.96 per kg, and large turkeys sell from £2.78.

Serving sizes

  • Small turkey – six to 11 people
  • Medium turkey – 11 to 14 people
  • Large turkey – 15 to 18 people

The fresh turkeys will be released for sale from December 19 in Aldi supermarkets. They will also be able to be ordered online via Click and Collect from the same date.

Aldi also offers frozen turkeys for as little as £2.78 per kg for a Large British Turkey Whole Bird, which is available in stores now.

How to cook a terrific turkey

Aldi shared key cooking tips to make sure you never serve dry turkey ever again.

First, prep by basting the turkey with 500ml of chicken stock or Caversham Cream Sherry.

Next, cook the turkey in tin foil, removing the foil for the last hour of oven cooking.

Once the turkey is cooked, allow the meat to rest for at least 45 minutes.

This enables the juices to be reabsorbed into the meat, resulting in a juicy-tasting turkey.
